Added new pedestrian activated flashing lights

County Commissioner Tick Segerblom this morning marked the activation of new pedestrian-activated flashing lights above a crosswalk near Mall Boulevard.

The flashing lights are on Katie Avenue, east of Maryland Parkway, and between the Boulevard Mall and the Best on the Boulevard mall. The location is also just down the street from Orr Middle School.

“With popular shopping malls and a school nearby, it’s a busy area for pedestrians,” Commissioner Segerblom said. “This new addition will make the crossing safer and help prevent accidents.”

Pedestrians crossing the street here press a button to trigger the flashing lights, which warn drivers to stop for those crossing the road.

According to previous studies of this area, more than 50 people cross the road here at peak times.

The new pedestrian-activated flashing lights are in Commission District E, represented by Commissioner Segerblom.
