SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, Senior Vice President and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cal Poly, is one of 16 inductees into the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) Distinguished Service Honor Roll.
The Distinguished Service Honor Roll was created in 2013 to recognize organizations’ most influential service leaders. The association recognized Jackson-Elmoore for his 20 years of service to the Urban Affairs Association. She was elected to the UAA Board of Directors, served on the Constitution Committee, and was Associate Senior Editor of the Journal of Urban Affairs for almost 10 years.
“I am honored to have been selected for this honor and to be recognized with my colleagues – with whom I was proud to serve alongside and whose collective contributions I truly respect to the estate and to the association,” said Jackson-Elmoore said.
“It has been a pleasure to engage in urban studies throughout my academic career, and I appreciate the work of UAA in support of this field.
“Since my arrival at Cal Poly, it has been a pleasure to learn about the teaching, learning, scholarship and outreach undertaken by faculty, staff and students who impact a myriad of communities and have important implications for solving urban problems. “
Prior to joining Cal Poly in 2020, Jackson-Elmoore held administrative and academic positions at Michigan State University as Dean of Honors College and as an Affiliate Professor in Social Work and the Global Urban Studies Program. She has served as Acting Assistant Dean of Urban Affairs Programs, Director of the Graduate Program in Urban Studies, and Co-Director of the Urban Policy and Policy Program at MSU. She has served on the Public Policy Committee of the Michigan American Council on Education Women’s Network and the Faculty Advisory Board for MSU’s Community Economic Development Program.
Jackson-Elmoore has conducted evaluations of community health care reform and published journal articles, books, and book chapters on the governance role of urban nonprofits, brownfields, health and the built environment, privatization of municipal services, community participation in local health planning. and engagement in state and local political processes.
UAA is the international professional organization of academics, researchers, and public / not-for-profit service providers. UAA is dedicated to creating interdisciplinary spaces to engage in intellectual and practical discussions about urban life. Through theoretical, empirical and action-oriented research, the UAA promotes various activities to understand and shape a fairer and more equitable urban world. The UAA also sponsors Upsilon Sigma – The Urban Studies Honor Society, an international and multidisciplinary honorary society dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of excellence in scholarship, leadership and engagement in urban studies and related fields.
