Donna Gillespie and Carl Sheline appear to be the mayor of Lewiston

Donna Gillespie

Name: Donna Gillespie

Age: Did not respond

Occupation: Retired social worker

Political experience: Nothing

Why do you think you are the most qualified, or the best candidate for this seat?

I don’t necessarily think I am the most qualified candidate for this seat, but I think I am best suited for this position as I will be defending all Lewiston residents and not just a small handful. This should be an imperative requirement for any mayor. Although I have no specific political experience, I am ready to be the advocate that the people of Lewiston deserve.

Please name two issues that you feel are critical to Lewiston’s future and how you would approach them.

Homelessness and drugs are two issues that need to be addressed to improve Lewiston’s future. The city can support a barrier-free homeless shelter with all the necessary resources readily available to help people with the struggles they face. Drugs are killing our residents and without support the problem will persist. The city should support a safe place to use drugs without fear of overdoses, while providing rehabilitation options for everyone who walks through its doors.

Do you support the New England Clean Energy Connect transmission line project? Why or why not?

Whether or not I support the CMP corridor is irrelevant for the mayoral election. What is relevant is that once the people of Maine have made a decision regarding this proposal and we learn how such a decision will directly affect Lewiston, then as mayor I will be working with our city council to research all the facts and determine the best course of action. for the whole city.

There is a lot of pressure and negativity that public officials face these days. As mayor, how would you handle this?

As a former government employee for 30 years, I have a lot of experience in pressure situations and have discovered that the best way to reduce negativity and tension is to give everyone a chance to ‘be heard. It wouldn’t be any different if he was elected mayor, as I would strive to allow all residents a chance to voice their concerns. It is imperative that everyone is treated with respect, whether you agree or not.

Carl Sheline

Name: Carl Sheline

Age: 42

Occupation: Co-manager of Munka Coworking

Political experience: Nothing

Why do you think you are the most qualified, or the best candidate for this seat?

I have lived and raised my children in Lewiston for over a decade. During this time, I have successfully started and managed businesses and developed a life of professional and personal relationships. I have also served on community boards including the LA Metro Chamber of Commerce. This is a critical time for Lewiston. There have been a lot of challenges, but with challenges come opportunities. I believe we can make meaningful changes that will have a positive impact on our community.

Please name two issues that you believe are critical to Lewiston’s future and how you would approach them.

We need to focus on economic development. By supporting and attracting new businesses, we can help fill storefronts and vacant buildings. It would increase the tax base, which would allow us to invest in our city and reduce taxes. We must also improve the image of our city. We can start by removing graffiti, picking up litter and beautifying our parks. I am proud to live here and I want everyone to feel that too.

Do you support the New England Clean Energy Connect transmission line project? Why or why not?

I support the CMP corridor because it makes a lot of economic sense for Lewiston. The environmental impact is low and the long-term economic benefits will make a huge difference to Lewiston with the additional annual revenue estimated at $ 6 million. As we look to the future, we need to explore cleaner energy options and that makes sense.

There is a lot of pressure and negativity that public officials face these days. As mayor, how would you handle this?

I think it’s important to keep a sense of perspective. “Why am I serving?” And “Why am I here?” Are two questions that can bring someone back to the center and remind us that commitment to service goes beyond partisan discourse. Citizens expect results from their municipal government and I will focus on advancing Lewiston.
