Jeanne Schaberg

Jeanne Schaberg passed away on Friday April 22, 2022 in the arms of her beloved husband and best friend. She was born in Dearborn, Michigan on May 24, 1953, to parents Fred and Helen Copple. She earned a BA from James Madison College at Michigan State University and two master’s degrees from MSU, making her an ardent Spartan of a lifetime. Her many interests and energies were reflected in an eclectic career, crowned as a highly respected social worker for Michigan State who simultaneously taught popular fitness classes. Jeanne has traveled nationwide as a trainer for ATT and has trained social workers across the state. Whether in the job market or in the gym, she loved sharing her knowledge and teaching others.

Jeanne was second mother to many nieces, nephews and friends, and generously supported them with her time, energy, finances and tremendous advocacy. She was known as “Mama Bear”, who welcomed those in need as her own and fiercely protected her cubs with love, kindness, guidance and the occasional course correction. She was a problem solver and had the attitude that no problem was ever too big to solve.

Jeanne attended St. John’s Catholic Church and Student Center as a student and never left. She was a longtime devoted member of the St. John’s Choir, a lover of art and nature, an extraordinary party planner and an animal whisperer. From an early age, Jeanne always had one or two of her beloved golden retrievers or springer spaniels by her side. She considered Harbor Springs and Captiva Island her treasured homes away from home.

As the youngest of seven children, Jeanne learned to put others first, to be family and faith-oriented, and to be fiery and tough when needed, especially against adversaries such as cancer. . She will be fondly remembered as small in physique, but huge in indomitable spirit.

Jeanne was predeceased by her parents and her two brothers, Fred and Jimmy Copple. She is survived by her loving husband Curt Schaberg, her siblings Mary Jane, Warren (Gail), Juanita and Phyllis, the “bonus children” Stephen and Kelsey Schaberg and Julia and Anna Copple, several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces , nephews, and special friends Brigit Martell, Liz Bosanic and Holly Noe.

A funeral mass will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church, 327 MAC Ave, EL, MI on May 24, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., with previous visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS.com) or St. John’s Catholic Church.
