October 14, 2021

The School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) recently recognized Sheri Koller, a social worker with the Long Beach Unified School District, for completing the rigorous portfolio process to become a National Certified School Social Worker (NCSSW).

Koller is the third school social worker in the country to receive NCSSW certification and the first in the state of California. Certification is the highest level of certification available in the field of school social work.

The diploma is awarded to school social work professionals who have voluntarily sought and achieved advanced practice certification that demonstrates mastery of the nine competencies of the National School Social Work Practice Model.

Koller is an expert in the field of student mental health and suicide prevention. She is a seasoned clinician who focuses on individual and family therapy, supervision, program development, advocacy, data analysis, crisis intervention and training.

With over 20 years serving LBUSD students, Koller has been instrumental in district initiatives to provide mental health resources. Her history with LBUSD dates back to the early 2000s, when she provided onsite mental health counseling to LBUSD schools, coordinated mental health referrals, and supervised staff through her employment with The Guidance Center, a agency funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. In 2016, Koller officially joined LBUSD and is currently in her second year as a District Mental Health Consultant.

“I am delighted to become the third school social worker in the country to receive the NCSSW distinction. As an advanced competency certification, the process involved submitting a portfolio of skills and services provided and writing nine competency papers,” he said. Koller said. “I am passionate about school social work services and am grateful for this opportunity as it will help me provide excellent service to LBUSD students and communities.”
