Meals on Wheels, the Moomers team up to help community members

Meals on Wheels is back. Once again they’ve partnered with Moomers Homeade Ice Cream to provide a fun way for the community to get involved and donate.

Meals on Wheels is an initiative set up by the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA). March marks the start of their Walk for Meals program. Meals on Wheels manager Lisa Robitshek says it’s a fun way to donate to a good cause.

“Federal and state funds are only 30% of the funds we receive. Which means 70% really have to reach out to the community to collect them,” says Robitshek.

Moomers and Meals on Wheels have been partners for years. Moomers owner John Plummer says when their relationship started it was just a way for them to give back to the community.

“Down and behold, they actually served my grandmother when she was alive and when she was here. So now really [is] a personal effort. said Plummer.

Meals on Wheels and Moomers have teamed up this year to give people a few ways to get involved. They’re hosting an ice cream flavor contest, and for the second year, the Moomers will be giving away take-out sundae kits in exchange for a donation.

Ice Cream Flavor Contest Features Flavors Created by Preschoolers from Four NMCAA Early Childhood ChildrenIce Cream Moomers 2 classroom. People can vote for the winning flavor on their Facebook page. Robitshek says the flavor contest is really heating up.

“Some of the names were like a sprinkle of kindness and better meals and wheels because it makes people feel better when we come to see them. So it will be fun to see people participate in that,” says Robitshek.

The winning flavor will be sold from March 11-20.

Meanwhile, Moomers will also have take-out sundae kits. A sundae kit comes with a half pint of chocolate and vanilla ice cream and five toppings. All proceeds from the sundae kits will go to Meals on Wheels.

Businesses can also get involved by purchasing sundae kits. The deadline for companies ordering a sundae kit is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8.
