WASHINGTON-Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA), vice chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations, today introduced legislation that would strengthen how the federal government interacts with the American public. The Confidence in Government Actwhich is co-led by Rep. Gerry Connolly, chair of the government operations subcommittee, details specific requirements for federal agencies to improve their services and mandates periodic reports to Congress on progress.
“The American people deserve nothing less than first-rate service from their federal agencies,” said Porter. “A lack of accessibility and efficiency not only wastes taxpayers’ money and Americans’ time; it also erodes the people’s trust in our government. I am proud to be working on legislation that will compel the government to provide high quality service and support.
“The quality of the federal government depends on the quality of the services it provides to the American people,” said Connolly. “That’s why it’s absolutely imperative that the public interact with a modern, accessible and customer-focused government. That was the goal President Biden set out in his executive order on transforming the federal customer experience and service delivery, and it’s the goal we seek to achieve with the Confidence in Government Act 2022. I thank Vice President Katie Porter for her tireless efforts to make government work for the American people, and I look forward to our continued partnership on this critical issue.
The Confidence in Government Act outlines steps for federal agencies to take to improve their interactions with the public. These include:
- The State Department the establishment of an online passport renewal process;
- The Treasury Department develop the electronic tax return and offer support by e-mail;
- The Ministry of Education create a centralized loan repayment portal;
- The Department of Homeland Security reduce passenger waiting times at airports;
- Small business administration streamline online applications in the event of a disaster; and
- Social Security Administration develop a mobile-friendly online process for applying for or receiving benefits.
Congresswoman Porter has always been an advocate of making government work better for the American people. She introduced legislation to hold the TSA accountable and allow parents to travel safely with breast milk. She has pushed to clear the IRS backlog of millions of tax returns and urged his colleagues to fully fund the agency so that more Americans get their money back. Porter also drafted a bill to expose members of Congress who misuse official funds to travel.
