South Dakota organizations speak out on telemedicine abortions

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is tackling abortions to make South Dakota the most powerful pro-life state.

On Tuesday, September 7, 2021, Governor Noem signed Executive Order 2021-12 which bans telemedicine abortions in South Dakota. A telemedicine abortion is provided via video format or direct contact with the patient. Patients then receive an abortion pill in the mail, but the patient still has to go through several steps before accessing the pill.

Dr Sarah Traxler, chief medical officer at Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood, said the order could impact some providers providing services to some doctors, but not their organization.

“It would impact any provider who might want to start expanding access to South Dakota patients through telemedicine abortion or directly to the patient, but as I said, currently Planned Parenthood is doing it. not providing abortions by telemedicine ”.

Governor Noem has also created a new position in her office titled Advocacy for the unborn, that person will go through all of South Dakota so that the state can have the strictest pro-life laws.

The director of community outreach for Catholic Social Services in Rapid City says that whenever pro-life legislation is proposed, both sides are suspicious.

“Whenever pro-life legislation comes in, a lot of people panic especially about women facing unplanned pregnancy, they are in a crisis situation, there are a lot of resources that can help.”
