VALOR – VA Learning Opportunities Residency | VA Western Colorado Health Care


The VALOR program is designed to attract students who graduate from Bachelor of Nursing programs to work at VA as registered nurses. This program gives exceptional students the opportunity to develop clinical nursing skills at a VA approved healthcare facility.

Learning opportunities include didactic or classroom experiences, competency-based clinical practice with a qualified AI preceptor, and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences.

VALOR students are more likely to join the VA after graduation. VALOR participants who work in a position with VA after graduation are typically hired above the entry-level salary rate established for new graduates due to having previously been oriented towards VA and its requirements. convenient.

Selection process

The selection of participants is made locally by the education, development and health care system management teams of VA Western Colorado. Interviews will take place during the month of March and job announcements will follow. Processing of new VALOR students will begin in April and nominations will begin in May.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Students recruited for the program must have completed the last semester or last trimester of their junior year in a National Nursing League (NLN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges and Nursing Baccalaureate accredited or generic equivalent nursing program.

Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 based on accepted academic work to earn credit toward a nursing degree. Students must also be able to complete a minimum of 400 hours as a VALOR nursing student at a VA institution, be a U.S. citizen, and meet physical examination standards upon entry into the Nursing program. VALOR.

VALOR students can be appointed full-time or part-time during the summer months and can continue during their last academic year part-time. Students must not be bound by an obligation of service towards a federal, state or private institution and must not be recipients of federal scholarships which incur a service obligation towards another organization.
